The HALI Access Network was formed in 2016 as an association of non-profit organizations in Africa who work with high-achieving low-income (HALI) students to access international higher education opportunities. These Indabas (meaning conference in Zulu) take place annually to enable its members across Africa share best practices for supporting HALI African students in their pursuit of higher education.
Ghana’s Aqua Safari Resort in Ada was the venue for this year’s event themed “Success to Support”. With 55 participants representing 49 institutions from 12 countries, the 4 days were filled with energy and drive to support our students.
Participants deliberated about higher education opportunities in Africa and beyond, with a university fair by admissions counselors from 13 schools. Topics discussed included “supporting students in conflict regions”; “giving back to your home country and fitting in”; and “mental health”. Scholarship opportunities and mentoring were also at the top of the list. Of course, participants had to wind down Ghana-style with a fireside chat and story-telling from various countries, as well as an excellent dance party!
With a mixture of intense deliberations, targeted planning, making new friends and reconnecting with the old, HALI Inaba Ghana 2019 was a major success with participants leaving with renewed energy for the year ahead.
